Brief Profile of the Department

The Department was stated in 1947 as Department of Biology with Prof. Probodh Chandra Laskar as the lone faculty followed by Prof. Surjya Kanta Das in 1948. Prof. Ramendra Sunder Khan joined the Department in 1949 and transformed the Department to an independent Department of Zoology. Prof. Khan was able to affiliate this Department for teaching I.Sc. course in Biology under University of Calcutta from 1950.

In 1953, Dr. P.V. Nair joined the Department and initiated to collect different forms of teaching aids then-available for the attractive way of teaching-learning process in zoology.

Zoology Honours Course with an initial intake capacity of 10 students was started in 1962, which was raised to 30 in 1980 and continued till now.

The Department was shifted to its present location in 1972, from the Main Building and was equipped with laboratory, class rooms, darkroom for photo-development, store room for chemicals & teaching aids and the Museum.

After the establishment of Tripura University the affiliation of the College was changed from University of Calcutta to Tripura University.

Up to 2016-17 the Department offered the Annual system for Elective/Pass & Honours programme.

The Department adopted six semester-based Major & General level under Tripura University, which was started from 2013-14 session. Presently as the College shifted its affiliation from Tripura University to MBB University and adopted six semester based UGC approved CBCS programme in Honours and General level.
